Grand Rapids Author Publishes Book Aimed At Relaxing Into the Rat Race

Everybody's heard the term "rat race." We know we're all running it, but often it seems the rat race is running us. As we juggle the complexities of work, home and family, is it possible to "relax into" the rat race, to run it on our own terms?

A new book by Grand Rapids author and consultant JoAnna Carey tackles the rat race head-on, and turns it into a race than can be run -- and won -- by charting your own course rather than navigating someone else's.

"…We usually know what we want, but we think we will have to make too many sacrifices or give up too much of what we already have to get to where we would rather be…" writes Carey in her self-published Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & the Maze of Life. "The way to overcome the fear of having to make too many sacrifices is to commit to making changes -- one step at a time."

Carey presents 52 simple, actionable keys – one for every week of the year – aimed at readers who are stressed, confused, downsized, promoted or relocated. While the keys may appear simple, they "can help you find new meaning in your current job, expose the specific areas of your life that are causing unhealthy levels of stress or show you a path to a whole new journey."

JoAnna Carey spent her early childhood on the South Side of Chicago, surrounded by four generations of family, and moved with her parents and siblings to rural Fountain, Michigan, at age 12.

She graduated cum laude from Grand Valley State University in 1995 with a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing.

Her professional background includes experience in marketing, public relations and sales, spanning the non-profit, healthcare and financial services industries (as a fully licensed stockbroker). She is a member of the American Marketing Association and Small Publishers Association of North America.

JoAnna is an energetic, young entrepreneur who incorporates her life experience and business success to design and deliver enjoyable, influential presentations.

As a speaker and author, she encourages others to face their fears, set goals, pursue their dreams and “bloom where planted.” Locally, she has spoken at the Women’s Resource Center to groups of women interested in gaining financial self-reliance.
